Software Requirements

This chapter has instructions for your OS of choice to get up and running with the files needed for this project. I assume a completely blank machine and we only need 3 things installed: - Java (>= version 7, though there’s a bit of talk on Java6 in the book) - Maven 3 - and Git

If you have all three of them installed, feel free to skip the following section and go straight to Project Setup. Otherwise, let’s go!

Windows

Instead of installing everything manually, I am vouching for using https://chocolatey.org/ as a windows package manager. Do the following tasks to complete this exercise:

  • Install Chocolatey as described on https://chocolatey.org/

  • Open up a command line window, like cmd.exe or powershell

  • Run the following command:

choco install jdk8 maven git

Mac OS X

Instead of installing everything manually, I am vouching for using https://brew.sh/ as a MacOSX package manager. You can also use the alternatives, like Fink or MacPorts.Do the following tasks to complete this exercise:

brew cask install java
brew install git
brew install maven

Linux

I assume you are using Ubuntu or any Debian derivative which uses apt-get as a package manager. If you are using CentOS or similar, feel free to use yum or your package manager of choice.

Do the following tasks to complete this exercise:

  • Open up a command line window, any shell will do and execute the following command:

sudo apt-get install default-jdk git maven

What you should see?

You should be able to open up a command line (independent of the operating system you are using) and not get any error when you do any of the following (maybe you have to restart your PC or log out/log-in again):

java -version
git --version
 iom-vvnersn

You should get something like this (I used Windows):

What you should see
Figure 1-1. Did you install everything correctly?
